Why does my drain keep blocking?
A recurring blockage is a clue
If a drain clears and then blocks again, the obstruction may be only part of the problem. Grease, wipes, scale and other material can repeatedly collect, but roots, displaced joints, cracks or deformation can also make a section of pipe more likely to block.
Look for a pattern
Note which fixtures are affected and what happens immediately before the problem returns. One fixture can point to a local waste pipe; several affected outlets may indicate a problem further along the drainage run. Gurgling, smells or water rising in another fixture can also be useful clues.
When investigation makes sense
Repeatedly clearing the same drain without understanding the cause can become expensive. Where a blockage returns, a CCTV inspection can help show whether there is root ingress, damage, a displaced joint or another restriction inside accessible pipework. See our CCTV drain surveys in Halifax guide.
What to do if it is blocked now
If wastewater is backing up or overflowing, reduce water use and deal with the active blockage first. For the main enquiry route, see blocked drains Halifax.
